It’s Complicated!

Youth Issues for YA Readers Using YA Characters

If life is complicated, teen life is even more so. At this age, you’re trying to figure out who you are, where you belong, how to belong–all the while dealing with deep emotions, insecurities and a growing awareness of the world that just isn’t fair. How do you cope? How did we cope as teens? Often by turning to books to see how our favourite characters made it through.

Join me, in my role as both a YA author and high school educator, and pediatric neuropsychologist Katie Keridan—also a YA author!—as we explore topics important to youth today through the lens of YA characters.

Every month we’ll post two articles about issues such as expectations and idealism in youth, reading and neuroscience, grief, trauma, parent relationships, sibling relationships, found families, rebellion, anxiety, empathy and more. Look for my article on the first of every month and Katie’s in the middle of the month.

We’re excited you’re here!
